Summary
Covercy worked with Dave to investigate its Azure infrastructure, understand dependencies, and work through a backlog of maintenance, cleanup, and optimization. The work included removing unused resources, moving applications to smaller hosting plans, and checking application health after changes.
Covercy’s engineering lead set the priorities. Dave investigated the environment and helped turn the findings into practical changes, with the work expanding into access requests, databases, older components, and Terraform.
A backlog across manually managed infrastructure
Much of Covercy’s infrastructure was managed manually through different portals. Maintenance, cleanup, and optimization work had accumulated in a backlog.
Understanding what was running, why it was there, and what needed attention was a substantial task in itself. Before making changes, the team needed a clearer view of the existing setup and its dependencies.
Human and machine intelligence, working together
Covercy needed a solution that could investigate the existing setup, understand the dependencies, and work through the backlog. Dave brought both human and machine intelligence, working directly with Covercy’s engineering lead to go deep into the environment and solve different issues.
What Dave brings to Covercy
Dave investigated Azure resources and their dependencies. Covercy removed infrastructure it no longer used and reduced costs by resizing resources or moving them to cheaper plans. For its internal admin application, the team switched to a smaller hosting plan, and Dave checked that the application was running correctly afterward.
Dave also uncovered a function that reported success even though its logs showed failures, as well as a failing nightly workflow. Looking beyond the surface-level status brought those problems to the team’s attention.
Beyond cleanup and cost optimization, Covercy has used Dave for access requests, database-related work, and updates to older components. Parts of its manually managed infrastructure have also been brought into Terraform, giving those resources a defined configuration in code.
Covercy sets priorities. Dave investigates and verifies.
Covercy’s engineering lead set the priorities, and Dave investigated the infrastructure and worked through the tasks. On the internal admin application, Dave helped assess the hosting requirements, Covercy’s team made the change, and Dave verified the application’s health afterward.
Results
- Unused infrastructure removed and costs reduced through resizing and cheaper plans
- Internal admin application verified after moving to a smaller hosting plan
- Hidden function failures and a failing nightly workflow uncovered
- Parts of manually managed infrastructure brought into Terraform
- Support expanded to access requests, databases, and older components
For Covercy, the value is having a solution that investigates deeply and helps turn that understanding into practical changes, from removing unused resources to updating older components.
